"Therapy only works when we have a genuine desire to know ourselves as we are. Not as we would like to be"
- Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

While it may be unconventional to use quotations from a 90's grunge band and a fictional serial killer, I have found these sentiments to be quite relevant to the therapeutic experience.

Our modern world has made some people feel like they cannot talk about their experience and emotions without tidying them up a bit. But therapy is about showing up with your authentic self, imperfections and all. It may take time before you feel comfortable processing some of your experience, but know that you will be met with warmth and curiosity.
No judging here.

Why start therapy?
During periods of anxiety and depression we frequently try and hang on with white knuckles, believing that we can use willpower to overcome the paralyzing feeling of being stuck. At other times, our lives and the world around us can feel like they are changing too quickly and we are losing control. This can be due to personal transitional periods (such as a graduation, new marriage, new baby, divorce, retirement or loss of someone close to us); or due to national and global transitional periods (such as political shifts, the economy, or climate change).
While anxiety and depression can be normal reactions when they are brief, the feeling of being stuck, being afraid or being overwhelmed can become the foundation of our existence, impacting our minds, our bodies, our relationship with others and our ability to move easily in the world. During therapy, we can work together to help create a life that moves more smoothly, establish relationships that are healthy, and find a way to develop self-compassion.
I look forward to working with you.
